The ethos of my creativity is taking what I enjoy in art, finding the bare bones, and stitching together a new amalgamation. I’ve put together a list of genres that I enjoy a couple of journal entries back. With this, I want to take said genres, sounds, feelings; and see what ways they blend together. For one, there’s a theme of electroacoustics. My music is heavily synth-based and percussive through drum machines. I want to create that same weird danceable pop of a Bjork, Arthur Russell, or Stephen Merritt. I also like the more noisy guitar instrumentation a la Ty Segall, Gilberto Gil, and King Khan. I want the eccentricity of Prince, Ween, or Connan Mockasin. The Soul of Stevie Wonder, D’Angelo, and Dijon. This concept is not only my favorite music, but also a push for communal effort. I want to collaborate and write more with people. I already see the roots growing with the artists around me. I feel that there are familiar tones in each of our own works. Together, there could be one hell of a collective in STL. I look at genres like Tropicalia, Shibuya-Kei, Freakbeat, etc; and they all carry a mindset of DIY, Cut and Paste Expression that is both inspired and unique. During a conversation with a fellow artist and friend, we talked about the various forms of counterculture, to either scrape a concept to its bare bones or maximalize it til it’s uncanny. I want to conceptualize both into my music and art. This is something I plan on writing more detail into and maybe even a manifesto about.
Until then, 23 SKIDOO
