## My first Drive-In Movies

Now that I'm officially out of college, I've been wanting to have what I feel is a true "Summer Vacation". Obviously, it's not really a vacation since I have work, but I like the idea of treating the summer like I would when I was a kid. I want to do fun get-togethers with my friends. I want to find a new hobby. I want to be outside :D It felt like during university, I basically would take the summer to unplug from school. I didn't really do much. Things will be different this Summer '26.

I went to a drive-in theater for the first time and saw Backrooms & Obsession as a double feature. I will try not to spoil anything specific, but I'd recommend watching either of these films headfirst before reading this. Both were movies I was not expecting to be as good as they are. Backrooms was a really well-written take on an internet trend that I've slowly grown tired of. I don't mind the liminal space aesthetic, but it can grow tiring when people want to explain every little aspect of what the Backrooms could be instead of just letting the horror come from the Unknown. I've talked about this a lot with Luckas, but I believe the best horror is implied rather than shown. There are times when the latter works (I'll get to you, Obsession), but I'd rather let the imagination control the fear than have everything explained to me. Backrooms is exactly what I want from the original creepypasta. It plays into the surrealist look of both the location and its counter-reality, almost reminding me of Toys (1992) or Edward Scissorhands (1990). It plays with liminality as a means less built on nostalgia, but on trauma. Weirdcore has definitely used trauma as a theme, but it's not something I would see Backrooms or an average liminal space post really bring up. It does start to lose its subtlety by the end, but I think that it still holds up in being a fun time. Also, it references the Caretaker, but not in a way that feels too on the nose. 

One of my friends joked after Backrooms ended that they wanted to leave the movie with their boots shaken. Well, that's Obsession. This movie might be one of my favorites that I've seen this year, if not the best Horror movie of the year. I haven't had a movie that made me both cringe (non-derogatory) and feel tense throughout in a minute. Inde Navarette played the FUCK out of her role, and it really makes me want to see her in more films. Like I said, this movie is pretty deadpan in what it wants to say. The "Be careful what you wish for" trope has been done many times now. Where I think Obsession is different is all in Navarette's performance. She is both the "antagonist" and a victim of the force controlling her actions. The wish makes the situation just worse and worse for everyone. It's truly a gut-punch movie.
